Findings from the Leading Edge

Career, Performance, and Creative Insights You Won't Find Anywhere Else

July 10, 2020

When the pandemic hit and sheltering in place orders happened, how many things did you find yourself simply deciding to put on hold?  With public venues gone and social distancing in place, you may have thought to yourself, “well, doing that collaborative project seems impossible right now. . . I guess I’ll pick it up later.” And over these last few months, you may have given yourself a (no doubt) long deserved break or found...

I know that with the worldwide quarantining, many of us are finding ourselves newly isolated and feeling thrown into uncertain times.  Everyone handles it differently.

Maybe you are spending all day in your pajamas thinking of all the things you feel like you "should" be doing.  Or perhaps you are actually feeling motivated to get your house in preparedness mode, create new video content, or stream yourself on social media....

As you may or may not have seen on social media, back in October I had a knee surgery (for those of you that need specifics - it was an ACL reconstructive surgery).  This was from an old knee injury I got from dancing back in 2016 that needed to be fixed but, well. . . I just wasn't super jazzed about going into surgery at that time .  . .  and so, it took me three years and a few re-injuries to actually realize

Why are we in such a hurry to be entertained?

These past few weeks I've been doing stand up comedy a few nights a week and one of the things I'm noticing about these comedy open mics is the pressure to get a laugh within the first 30 seconds or less. There was a bit that I really loved where I started with something serious and led people down a 1 minute path in order to get my first joke. I liked it but it didn't really work v...

OMG I did it!

It’s something I’ve always wanted to try: Stand up comedy. And this week I dove head first into this world and told jokes at three different open mics around the Bay Area.

As somebody who coaches other performers I always feel like I need to put myself in the hot seat once in awhile or I lose my edge.  How can I relate to the fears of other actors, dancers and musicians otherwise? How an I relate to your perform...

I came across some really fascinating information that I just MUST share with you! It explains why people are driven to make goals, intentions and New Year's Resolutions.  . . . why it's a healthy thing to do even when we don't necessarily meet or keep those resolutions!

You mean I can set goals and not keep them and still be ok and normal and worthy and happy?

Wild notion, eh?

YES! YES, you are worthy of love eve...

I know that in 2019 I will do things and some of them will fail.  Some of them will flourish too.  But more often things will take longer than I want, will need more work than I anticipate.  And this is ok.

Today, I lie on my bed in an overstretched comfy cotton dress I never wear outside my house, my face free of makeup, a box of chocolates half eaten at my left, a pile of books on my bed. I feel content drifting in...

Have you ever felt a pull to create something, but you've felt too down or too "in the dark" to even know where to begin?

Of course, it's great when we get that hit of inspiration and ideas begin flowing to us effortlessly!  We feel fantastic! Like we are masters of our own creativity!!! Hazaaaa!

But it doesn't always go down like that, right?

We don't always get to have the most ideal circumstances from which to...

Do you know what is worse than flop sweating or a racing heartbeat?  The stories we make up about them.  When we go into panic mode (otherwise known as fight or flight) then we also tend to start spiraling into self-doubt and self-conscious thoughts.

That's why I created The Windmill Exercise which I've now taught to hundreds of performing artists at unions and universities and groups all over the U.S.  It's great for ge...
